Last Friday evening, Downtown Marion, Inc.’s Christmas Gala was a beautiful and meaningful celebration of our community, our downtown, and the people who continue to show up and invest their time, energy, and hearts into this place.
It was especially meaningful to see several friends and partners recognized for the impact they are making downtown.
Jenny Lust, owner of Spruce & Sparrow and Elena Renee, received the Heart of Downtown Award, a fitting honor for a courageous pioneer who not only runs two beautiful boutiques, but also tirelessly collaborates with and supports other downtown businesses through her work with DMI.
Alex Sheridan received the Rising Star Award for the creativity and energy he brings to downtown through Bucci’s, The Brickyard, and events like BRAVO, Brunch Please, Family Meal, and the Summer Concert Series. Watching Alex create experiences that bring people together, bring visitors from out of town, and shine a positive light on Marion is inspiring.
The City of Marion was also recognized for its partnership and investment in downtown beautification, particularly the care and maintenance of seasonal color displays that add so much life and vibrance to our streets.
I was deeply honored to receive the Community Champion Award, an acknowledgment that I truly see as a reflection of the collective effort of so many people working together to move downtown Marion forward. I love this place, and it continues to be my honor to point out all the people, places, and spaces that make it special! What made the moment even more special was being surrounded by members of our HDG team that evening. We spend so much time working, building, problem-solving, and pushing through challenges that it was a gift to simply celebrate together and enjoy the fruit of that shared effort. During the award presentation, a video was shared with messages from family members, friends, and community partners, which was incredibly meaningful and moving. It served as a powerful reminder of why this work matters and why continuing to pursue big vision, even when it’s hard, is worth it.
Downtown progress never belongs to one person or one organization. It happens when entrepreneurs take risks, nonprofits create space for collaboration, city leaders invest in partnership, and residents show up with their presence, encouragement, and support. Friday night was a tangible expression of that shared commitment. Seeing nearly 200 people come together to celebrate, give generously, and support the mission of Downtown Marion, Inc. was both energizing and hopeful. It left me grateful, encouraged, and more committed than ever to the future we are building together.

Last week, Sara, Courtney, and I also had the opportunity to attend the Small Town Developer Summit in Plain City. We spent time alongside like-minded dreamers and doers from communities across Ohio, candidly discussing the realities we all face right now: rising construction costs, shifting retail and restaurant trends, the importance of clear communication, and the complexity of doing development work that is both financially responsible and deeply rooted in place. While every town has its own story, the common thread was a shared commitment to creating downtowns that are vibrant, welcoming, and built to last. Besides spending time with great people, it was a joy to get to enjoy lunch at The Clocktower Kitchen + Bar, the latest hard-fought project from my friends Rayce Robinson and Andy Warnock.
We returned home encouraged and grateful. Grateful for partners who are willing to wrestle with hard problems together, for communities that believe in long-term vision over quick wins, and for the opportunity to do this meaningful work right here in Marion. Nights like the Downtown Marion Christmas Gala and days spent learning alongside peers across the state are reminders that while the work is challenging, it is also deeply rewarding.
As we head into Christmas week, I am most grateful for the love, joy, and hope found in Christ, and the calling I feel to help redeem places and communities just as my own life has been redeemed. I want to again thank you for being part of this journey with us, and for continuing to show up, support our downtown, and believe in what is possible when a community moves forward together!
