Last week I had the privilege of speaking at the River Valley Schools Convocation, sharing with the entire staff and faculty about the exciting work happening in downtown Marion, and how it connects directly to the work they do every day. When we talk about revitalization, we often think about sticks, bricks, and new businesses. And yes, we’ve seen over 60 new restaurants, shops, offices, and gathering places open downtown since 2018. But the real story is about people…the students who will soon become our workforce, entrepreneurs, and community leaders. Schools and downtown are not separate worlds. They’re two sides of the same coin in building the future of Marion.
Here are some of the high points that I discussed during my time with Team RV:
Why Downtown Matters
A strong, vibrant downtown is more than a nice place to shop or grab coffee. It’s what Economic Developers call “soft infrastructure”. In other words, it’s the kind of ecosystem that attracts businesses, talent, and investment. Local places and authentic experiences anchor our memories and shape how we
feel about our hometown. That pride is critical if we want our young people to see Marion as a place worth staying, building, and investing in.
The Role of Schools
As I told the educators at River Valley, you are shaping not only the minds, but also the confidence and
character of the next generation. Employers tell us all the time: technical skills matter, but soft skills, curiosity, communication, and perseverance are the X-factor. These are the very qualities you nurture in classrooms every day.
And by working together, we can give students more exposure to real-world experiences — job shadowing, entrepreneurship, and chances to interact with the business community. Those touchpoints don’t just prepare them for careers; they plant the seeds of ownership and pride in Marion.
Cross-Pollination Opportunities
We talked about practical ways schools and downtown businesses can connect:
Hosting school events or fundraisers downtown
Encouraging staff outings at local restaurants and shops
∙nviting business owners to speak with students about entrepreneurship
Allowing local businesses to supply products or showcase their work in school settings
Every one of these is a small step that reinforces the message: downtown is the hub of our community, and our young people belong at the center of it.
What We Can All Do
The same call-to-action I shared with the River Valley team applies to all of us: support downtown businesses with your dollars, not just your words. Bring your family and friends to local restaurants, shops, and events. Choose downtown as a destination of first choice. And most importantly, talk positively about our community…with your neighbors, your coworkers, and yes, with our students.
Looking Ahead
Marion is at an inflection point. Our downtown is growing, our schools are shaping the next generation, and together we can create a place where more and more people want to live, work, and invest. I left the convocation encouraged, because I saw a room full of educators who care deeply about this community. And when schools and downtown pull in the same direction, Marion’s future looks very bright.
The City of Marion is proud to celebrate being named America’s Strongest Town, and we want our entire community to join in on the fun! To mark this incredible achievement, we are hosting a free community celebration filled with food, inflatables, entertainment, and activities for all ages.
We are thrilled to announce that our second edition of HDG monthly is printed and distributed downtown, at our college campuses, and the YMCA. Take a picture and tag us if you see one in the wild!

When I was a student back in the 1900s, one of my favorite times was Show & Tell. Anyone else? We all have certain things that are extra special to us, and we are proud to show our family and friends. We don’t just point to it. We don’t just talk about it as an object. We tell others why it is special. We share the special stories and memories.
One of the things I asked of Team RV last week in my presentation, was that our downtown become a place where they Show & Tell. Bring friends and family to events. Organize a staff lunch or happy hour at a local restaurant. Meet a friend for a shopping trip this Saturday morning. Take your family to throw axes at Kin & Kilt, jump at MaxAiir, try out the golf simulators at Nicolosi Golf Lounge, attend a live performance at the Palace. Learn the stories behind the businesses, like some that I shared with the group. And more importantly, intertwine you and your family’s story with our historic downtown and anchor new memories here.
I am proud to be raising my family here, and we are working to make our community a better place. If we all work to that end, our momentum will accelerate at a pace that others can’t help but notice, and they will want to come see it too.
It all starts with a little Show & Tell. Will you participate?
Better Together,
