I have been reading a lot lately about the “Experience Economy”. Essentially, the idea is that in our ever-evolving world, where so many purchases are commoditized with online, predictive, and one-click ordering, as humans, we still crave experiences that release our feel-good (dopamine) and connection
(oxytocin) hormones. A book I recently read, Main Street Mavericks, by Jamie Izurieta, talked about how downtown and Main Street businesses are perfectly situated to create unique and engaging experiences through events, personalized service, and the individual touches that come from local people operating
independent businesses.
I thought about some of my most memorable recent experiences, and the vast majority of them included spending time with family and friends within the backdrop of small, local businesses. As a consumer, have you thought recently about how you can make meaningful experiences out of your dining, shopping, and entertainment? In a world where you might feel like a commodity when you are being marketed and sold to by corporate retailers and chain restaurants, have you noticed how good it feels to walk into a local shop and have the shopkeeper light up at your presence, maybe even call you by name, then make a personalized recommendation for something for yourself or a gift that is just perfect?! Have you noticed how good it feels to dine at an independent restaurant when you realize the experience you are having can only authentically be had at this one place like it in the world? Have you ever thought about how it sometimes feels like Friends or Cheers when you walk into the local coffee shop, brewery, or cocktail bar?
I love the dozens of places right in Downtown Marion where we can have these unique experiences. Where will you go this week?

other side of you shopping, dining, and being entertained locally, because I talk with our local downtown merchants, and I hear how much it means to them to see friends and neighbors walking through their doors and supporting with their dollars, not just their words. I doubt you realize how much it means to
each of those individuals when you support them.
