Summer in Downtown Marion: Show Up When It Matters
Most people do not think about this, but summer is actually one of the harder seasons for downtown businesses. I want to change that, because the people reading this newsletter are exactly the kind of people who would want to know.
Retailers tend to feel it first. The so-called “J months,” January, June, and July, are historically the slowest of the year for boutiques and shops. January makes sense. But June and July? That one surprises people. The short answer is that discretionary spending shifts hard toward travel in the summer. Families are
budgeting for vacations, camps, and activities. The dollars that might have gone to a local boutique or a night out downtown go somewhere else instead.
Restaurants and entertainment feel the same pull. People are away. Schedules are full. And when it is 90 degrees outside, sometimes the couch wins. I get it. I am not here to guilt anyone. But I am close enough to our tenants to see the impact firsthand, and I think awareness is the first step toward doing something about it.
So here is my ask. Be intentional this summer about where you spend your discretionary dollars. A few ideas that are easier than you might think: Need a gift for a birthday, anniversary, or housewarming? Start with a downtown boutique before defaulting to Amazon.
Meeting someone for lunch? A local restaurant over a chain is a meaningful choice, even if it is just once a week.
Have out of town guests coming? One of our downtown Airbnbs will run you about what a hotel costs, and the experience is a lot better.
Looking for something to do? Downtown Marion has more going on than most people realize. Local theatre at The Palace, browsing and playing with new arrivals at LuLu’s Toy Co, pottery painting at Mimi’s Art Hollow, Friday Flavor Bar at Elena Renee, 3rd Thursday and Second Saturday festivities, just to name a few.
And it is a great time to try one of the newer food spots! Lazeez Grill, 101 Smokehouse, OX-B’s, and Whit’s Frozen Custard are all worth discovering. Or go back and support an old favorite like Attaboy’s, Taco Central, Baires, Bucci’s, or Mike’s Deli. Maybe grab one of the new seasonal creations at Sip Easy Coffee, The Remnant, or Marion Brewing while you are at it.
Momentum downtown is real, and it is fragile. It takes years to build and can stall faster than you would expect. Summer is the stretch where that momentum is most at risk, and the most important time for those of us who care about this community to show up.

Marion has been named one of Ohio Magazine’s five Best Hometowns for 2026, recognizing the community as one of Ohio’s great places to live, work, and visit.
Ohio Magazine solicited nominations in the spring and conducted visits across the state throughout the summer. During the visit to our hometown, I had the privilege of conducting tours. I loved having the opportunity to meet people and show them around our great city. Seeing what’s special about Marion is something people have to experience in person. The history, the development, the people. In the end, that’s what won them over. They saw what everyone sees who visits our downtown, they see its vibrance from past to present.
The magazine’s editors chose Marion as a Best Hometown due to our downtown redevelopment successes and rich sense of history, including the home, presidential library and museum, and final resting place of President Warren G. Harding.
We are thrilled Marion is in the spotlight again, another testament to all our community leaders’ hard work and progress.
Marion will be featured in the November/December 2026 and July/August 2027 issues of Ohio Magazine, as well as online, giving readers across Ohio a chance to discover what makes our community worth a visit.
Few things drive me more than watching the entrepreneurs in our downtown succeed. I see the early mornings and the long weekends. I see what it takes to keep the lights on and the doors open while building something from scratch in a mid-size Ohio city. And I genuinely believe that locally owned, one of a kind businesses are one of the most powerful drivers of community quality of life, local prosperity, and the kind of place that attracts and keeps good people.
And Ohio Magazine saw it too. When other people recognize it and acknowledge built and stand for, it speaks volumes. We have what others see and want. We have something special right in our backyard. We have people that step up to bring life to our downtown with their ideas, passions, and work ethic.
When you walk through their doors, you are doing more than buying a coffee or a gift. You are telling someone that what they built matters. That is not a small thing.
So whenever you can this summer, eat downtown. Shop downtown. Bring your people downtown. Talk about the good experiences you have. Be proud of this place, because it earns that pride a little more every single month, and we can all be part of that.
