There is something unmistakably special about Downtown Marion during the holidays. Maybe it is the glow of the lights reflecting off the fresh snow. Maybe it is the decorated windows and storefronts. Or maybe it is the energy from seeing people browse the shops and enjoy coffee, drinks, or meals downtown. Whatever the reason, last weekend reminded me why this season in Downtown Marion feels so much like stepping into a Hallmark movie.
On Saturday evening, Downtown Marion Inc. hosted the Downtown Marion Lighted Truck Parade and the Tree Lighting at Founders Park, and it was magical. Kids bundled up with smiles on their face, families huddled together with snow gently falling, while over 80 trucks, floats, buses, and bikes…covered in thousands of lights moved slowly down the street, and a shared countdown as Founders Park was officially lit for the 2025 season. It was like a real life snow globe! These moments continue to bring together the community and create traditions and memories for families.
The weekend also brought Black Friday and Small Business Saturday, and our downtown retailers felt genuine support. Several merchants mentioned that Friday was especially strong. Saturday traffic was a little softer, but the energy and goodwill were still unmistakable. The truth is that every visit matters during this season. Many of our small shops do nearly half of their annual business at this time of year, and your intentional choice to shop local helps keep their doors open, their teams employed, and their dreams moving forward.
One of the most encouraging things I heard this week was the number of area businesses placing corporate gift orders from downtown shops. Gift baskets carefully curated from local merchants are becoming a favorite way for companies to thank their clients. And I also heard of parents who said that if toys for their kids did not come from LuLu’s then they were not interested. I love that. It is true that LuLu’s is able to help suggest and select gifts, wrap them, and even ship them. Many of our other small shops offer the same level of personal care. Do not hesitate to ask…they are ready to make it easy for you! Amazon cannot come close to that kind of attention and service.
We also had a special visitor last week. Brandy Gleason from Ohio Road Trips spent a holiday shopping day in Marion and shared her experience with her large Facebook group. It was a gift to see someone from outside our area talk about the charm, hospitality, and uniqueness of our downtown. Moments like that help spread the word far beyond Marion County.
If you are looking for more ways to enjoy the Christmas spirit, there is plenty ahead. This weekend you can experience Christmas at the Palace on Friday evening, Saturday evening, or Sunday afternoon. On Saturday morning at 10am, The Peanut Push, which supports Junior Service Guild returns to Founders Park. It is a fun way to begin a full day of dining, shopping, and entertainment downtown. Most shops are open 7 days a week through Christmas, so if you haven’t made it down recently, you have lots of opportunities!
As we move deeper into the holiday season, my hope is that each of us takes a moment to step back from some of the busyness and appreciate what is happening here in our city. The lights, the events, the new shops, the familiar traditions, and the small but meaningful signs of progress are reminders that downtown Marion is becoming a place people are proud to call home. Every
person who chooses to shop here, dine here, attend an event, or bring their family downtown is playing a part in writing a new chapter for our community. It is easy to underestimate the impact of simple decisions, but they add up in powerful ways.
So as you make your holiday plans, I invite you to spend a little more time downtown. Pick up a gift, grab a meal, bring friends to a show, or simply walk by Founders Park and enjoy the lights. Your presence matters more than you may realize. This season is about generosity, connection, and gratitude, and it has been inspiring to see those qualities shine throughout Marion.
