As this Thanksgiving season arrives, I find myself in a deeply reflective place. This has been the hardest year we have experienced since beginning our work in downtown Marion. Some projects stretched longer than expected. Some challenges felt heavier than we anticipated. There were moments of uncertainty, fatigue, and even discouragement. And yet, in the midst of all of it, I am overwhelmed with gratitude.
I am thankful for the work we get to do. For the honor of helping breathe life back into old buildings and forgotten spaces. For the privilege of partnering with dreamers, builders, and risk-takers who see potential where others may not and are willing to work to make it happen. Watching ideas turn into businesses, storefronts fill with light, and people gather in places that once sat empty is a gift I do not take lightly.
I am incredibly thankful for my family. For Lindsey and our kids, who carry so much of the emotional weight behind the scenes, who stay patient when the days are long and the stress is real, and who remind me what truly matters. Their encouragement, sacrifice, and unwavering belief in this mission give me strength when mine runs thin. The same goes for my HDG team. They work tirelessly behind the scenes to make the experience for residents, commercial tenants, and Airbnb guests as positive and seamless as possible! Plus they have to put up with me every day!
I am grateful for the courageous entrepreneurs who choose to plant their dreams in downtown Marion. Many of them are taking enormous personal and financial risks to pursue something bigger than themselves. Their bravery inspires me daily. I am also thankful for our local community members who continue to show up, spend their dollars locally, attend events, share posts, invite friends, and choose to believe in this community alongside us.
I am deeply appreciative of our local government leaders, church leaders, nonprofit directors, and civic partners who are equally committed to strengthening Marion as a whole. While we may approach that work from different angles, the heart behind it is the same: a desire to see our community thrive for generations to come.
And I am thankful for the friends from near and far who encourage, challenge, and inspire us. Those who speak truth, offer perspective, celebrate small wins, and remind us that this work matters.
Even the struggles of this year have shaped me. They have forced our team to become more disciplined, more thoughtful, more resilient. They have sharpened our leadership, strengthened our problem-solving, and matured our vision. For that, I am grateful too.
As we pause to give thanks, please know how thankful I am for you and for the role you play, whether large or small, in this story that is still being written. Happy Thanksgiving, from my family to yours.
